The roar of Etna

SICILIAN SOUL

Set along the slopes of Etna, Torre Mora’s vineyards capture the volcanic soul of the soil, exhibiting the energetic spirit of this land. The area surrounding Mount Etna enjoys peculiar characteristics, which blend together to generate a unique terroir in the world. The lava nature of the soil, the high altitude of the vineyards and the considerable temperature range between day and night ensure an ideal microclimate, laying the foundation for the production of wines of undisputed quality.

The three vineyards of Torre Mora run along the stage of Etna, respectively in the Contrada Dafara Galluzzo in Rovittello, in the Contrada Alboretto Chiuse del Signore in the municipality of Linguaglossa and in the Contrada Moscamento, also in Rovittello. Each vineyard on the estate tells a different and elegant nuance of this corner of Sicily, which boils in the bottles of Torre Mora.

The absolute prince is Nerello Mascalese, which together with Nerello Cappuccio competes to create the delicious Etna Rosso DOC. A native grape variety of Etna, Nerello Mascalese reveals an intense color, as also anticipated by its name. The very late ripening of its bunches leads to a harvest period that is between the second and third week of October. Elegance, body and tannins are his watchwords. Torre Mora wines enhance the fruity nature of Nerello Mascalese, without forgetting the spicy notes. Softness and elegance are at the service of expressiveness, resulting in wines that are both fresh and complex, which do not give up that typical roar of the volcano.

Carricante, the white soul of Etna

Etna Rosso DOC: between fruit, spices and tannins sculpted by lava.

The other main actor is Carricante, a white grape variety, which gives its freshness to Etna Bianco DOC, which from the nose exhibits its decisive character, interwoven with fruity references. Secondly, earthy, floral and herbaceous notes open up. The sip carousels on hints of ripe fruit, pear, apple and apricot, framed by mineral references. Body, length and balance mark the taste, until the last ring, dominated by spicy hints

The impervious nature of the soil, tormented by daring ups and downs, forces our winegrowers to confront the challenges of “heroic viticulture”. Here, the profile of the landscape makes it impossible to resort to machinery, calling on farmers to make considerable efforts and refine their ingenuity. The forms of cultivation we use are the spurred cordon, in small flat areas, and the alberello, on the terraces. The latter shape the landscape giving a unique touch to the slopes of Etna.

Where the hand of man meets the work of nature

The staircase of the volcano

The incredible scenography in which the Torre Mora team operates is carved into the name of the estate’s premium line: “Scalunera”. Its name, borrowed from the Sicilian dialect, indicates a “staircase”, thus evoking the intrepid meanders that dot the slopes of Etna, on which the typical lava stone walls peep out from time to time.

In this natural cradle, Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio and Carricante grow luxuriantly, preserving intact the bold and impervious character of the territory.

The “Scalunera” line intends to capture this spirit by offering velvety wines, animated by a lively freshness and marine reminiscences. The balanced sip accompanies towards a roaring finish like the volcanic spirit of Etna.

Soft pink, bread crust and red fruits, with mineral freshness.

The perlage that dances on Etna

The “Le Chiuse” line, from the French Clos, was born from the desire to enhance the expression of our Etna crus, locally identified with the term Contrade. Here, the dry stone walls, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, define the ancient boundaries of our vineyards.

The flagship of the line is our Chiuse Metodo Classico, which finds its perfect balance after 44 months of aging in the bottle, following the second fermentation. The slow maturation process on the lees gives structure and favors the development of refined tertiary aromas.

To the eye it returns a delicate soft pink, while its very fine perlage dances in the glass. The nose spreads aromas of bread crust, raspberry, currant and wild strawberries, alternating with the typical citrus references of the Sicilian volcanic soil. In the mouth it spreads a delicious sensation of freshness, accompanied by the mineral roar of Etna. The sip descends lively, while a pleasant acidity tickles the palate.
